The battle for top of the UK charts is on.
Ed Sheeran is currently leading the charts with Perfect but with less than a week to go, he may be ousted off his top spot by Eminem with River.
Sheeran’s hit, released earlier this month, has been an instant success and he secured his place on the charts by releasing multiple versions of Perfect, including a duet with Beyonce.
However, the American rapper made a surprise entrance into the charts just two weeks ago with the song that dissects one of his former toxic relationships. In an ironic twist it also includes back-up vocals from Sheeran, meaning that if River makes it to the top spot, Sheeran would be replacing himself to Number 1.
According to Official Charts, Sheeran is currently ahead on sales but Eminem is being streamed more frequently.
But it’s not just new songs competing this year. In a tribute to George Michael, who died on Christmas Day last year, Last Christmas by Wham! has reached Number 3. Fans are making a big push to get the 80s classic further up the ladder. However, this does seem unlikely going by the current numbers.
Another possible latecomer to the Christmas Chart Party could be Adele, who is rumoured to be on the verge of releasing a last-minute Christmas single. The Power Ballad Diva has been a vocal campaigner for the victims of Grenfell Tower and it is possible she may pay tribute to those impacted in a new single. It has also been rumoured that she may pay tribute to George Michael. However, at this stage in the battle, she would need to sell tens of thousands of singles in a very short space of time to contend with Sheeran, Eminem or George Michael.
With all these greats in the charts this year, we look forward to finding out who declares victory.
